Hello Again!
The sun is out and it's hot outside, all the more reason to stay in and practice some Use of English ;)
Today we are going to review Part 2 Open Cloze, also known as 'the one with the gaps'. These gaps can sometimes seem as vast and as overwhelming as the Grand Canyon itself.

Today we are going to review Part 2 Open Cloze, also known as 'the one with the gaps'. These gaps can sometimes seem as vast and as overwhelming as the Grand Canyon itself.
Here are some things to consider when completing this part.
Tips
- Read the whole text first. This way you will have a better idea of the context of each sentence.
- Contracted words (they'll) are count as two words (they will).
- If you are undecided which word could be the answer, then go with your first thought, it's usually correct.
- Be careful with the use of 'that'. If it is a non-defining clause use which.
- Read again once you have finished to make sure that everything sounds 'right'.
- Read a lot and then, read even more! reading is the key to practicing this part. The more you read the more answers you will know instantly.
Almost all of the words you need to use in the gaps will be "grammar words".
The most commmon missing words are:
- prepositions/ adverbs like “from” and “for”
- linking words like “if” and “though”
- determiners like “all” and “any”
- auxiliary verbs like “had” and “would”
- reference words like “this” and “it”
- relative pronouns like “that” and “which”
- question words like “which” and “when”
- time expressions like “yet” and “last”
